Volunteers Ready for the Streets

On Saturday, August 25, the University will disperse more than 350 students to volunteer at various nonprofit organizations in the Tampa Bay area. From 1-4 p.m., students will be doing tasks ranging from working with the elderly and cleaning to working at a donation center and building a house. A kickoff lunch will begin the busy day’s activities at 11 a.m.  

"Into the Streets" includes incoming freshmen, upper-class student leaders, and more than 15 faculty and staff, including President Ronald L. Vaughn. The turnout for last year’s inaugural event was far above expectations, guaranteeing "Streets" a permanent place as an annual UT community event. An even larger volunteer response is expected this year.    

The nonprofit organizations benefited include Haven W. Poe Runaway Center, the Spring of Tampa Bay, the Florida Aquarium, Francis House, Hanna Oaks, Hudson Manor, Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity and others.

The annual event is held during freshman orientation, and the goal is to have students realize the importance of giving back to others in the surrounding community. The hope is that this will ignite an interest that will continue throughout their college careers and beyond.
