Vietnam Fighter Pilot to Speak About Novels and Films

Fighter pilot-turned-professor John Clark Pratt speaks on “Seeking a Happy Medium: The Film and Fiction of the Vietnam War” on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m. in the Riverside Alumni Conference Room. His presentation is part of the Scholars’ Symposia sponsored by the UT’s Department of English and Writing.

A fighter pilot in Vietnam who has received the Excellence in the Arts Award from the Vietnam Veterans of America, Dr. Pratt, a Colorado State University English professor, has written extensively on the war. His books include Vietnam Voices (Viking Penguin, l984), Reading the Wind: The Literature of the Vietnam War (Duke, 1986), and a novel, The Laotian Fragments (Viking, l974; Avon, l985). 

Pratt’s many other publications include The Meaning of Modern Poetry (Doubleday, l962), John Steinbeck (Erdmans, l970), and editions of two novels in the Viking Critical Library Series—Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Graham Greene’s The Quiet American. 

Pratt received his Ph.D. at Princeton, his BA at the University of California-Berkeley and his MA at Columbia University.
