University Will Hold Two Days of September 11 Events

The campus chimes will begin ringing at 8:46 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, remembering one year to the minute after the first plane struck the World Trade Center, and ushering in two days of community activities over a three-day period of remembrance on the UT campus.  

On Wednesday, Sept. 11, the chimes will ring until 10:30 a.m., the time the WTC’s north tower collapsed.  As the chimes ring out, UT students will read the victim’s names in front of the John H. Sykes College of Business.  When they stop ringing, all will observe a moment of silence.  Among those remembered specifically will be UT graduate L. Russell Keene III, who perished in the WTC attacks.

On Friday, Sept. 13, leaders from the educational, political, legal and business realms in the Tampa Bay area and beyond will lead a day-long series of on-campus discussions moderated by Kathy Fountain of Fox 13 and Gil Thelen of the Tampa Tribune.  The four panels addressing Effects of 9/11 on America and the World will include several UT professors.

The day will culminate with a model United Nations from 4:30-9 p.m., featuring a speaker from the U.N. from 6:30-7:15.

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 10, the UT Diplomats will distribute wristbands to students, faculty and staff.  Each wristband will bear the name of one September 11th victim.  Students, faculty and staff will wear the wristbands through Friday, Sept. 13.

All events are open to the public and free of charge as the University and Tampa Bay communities come together to remember the tragedy of a year ago.

A final, detailed schedule of all the UT events remembering September 11th will be released during the week preceding the events.
