Below is a list of STD tests offered by the University of Tampa Student Health Center.
HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus) This test is a screening used to detect the presence of the Herpes Simplex Virus in the blood. This test will detect a positive result as well as determine if the virus is HSV type 1 or HSV type 2. HSV type 1 is more commonly associated with infections of non-genital sites, while HSV type 2 is more commonly associated with genital tract infections. Although there is no treatment that can cure HSV, symptoms and outbreaks can be controlled by anti-viral medications.
Cost: $20.00 Chlamydia/Gonorrhea This test is performed to detect the presence of a Chlamydia and/or Gonorrhea infection. Chlamydia is the leading cause of STDs in the United States and can be present without symptoms 50 percent of the time. Gonorrhea is also very common and can be present without symptoms as well. Both infections are curable with antibiotic treatment. Without treatment other serious and permanent health problems may occur.
This test can be performed two ways. - A urine specimen is collected from a patient who has not urinated for at least two hours. This is the most accurate and least invasive form of testing and is therefore recommended. Cost: $40.00
- A genital swab is obtained, from either the cervix of a female patient or the urethra of a male patient, by a nurse practitioner. Cost: $30.00
RPR (Syphilis) This is a blood test used as a screening for syphilis. Syphilis is passed through direct contact with a syphilis sore. It is most commonly passed between 2 males during sex. Although syphilis is not common, it is present within the United States. If caught early, a syphilis infection is easy to cure with antibiotics.
