Evacuation Information

Tampa Bay Region Official Recommendations

The American Red Cross and the Hillsborough County Emergency Management Center recommend that all individuals decide well in advance where to relocate in the event of an evacuation order.


***In other words, if a campus evacuation were to occur, University community members should consider relocating to an American Red Cross approved hurricane shelter only as a last resort!***

UT Students' Emergency Shelter Site

For those students unable to find shelter with friends/relatives or other safe locations, The University of Tampa has a designated American Red Cross approved evacuation site in the northeast section of Tampa — the Lawton Chiles Elementary School building.

Should the UT campus require evacuation, students will be provided with maps illustrating alternative driving routes from the University to Lawton Chiles Elementary School. Additionally, students will receive comprehensive instructions, checklists and other evacuation information. UT's Residence Life staff members, trained by the American Red Cross, will assist with shelter operations/management and remain there with students.

UT to Lawton Chiles Elementary School via I-275 North

• Depart UT on North Boulevard going NORTH to Cass Street; .3 mi.
• Turn RIGHT onto Cass Street and proceed to Florida Avenue; .6 mi.
• Turn LEFT onto Florida Avenue and proceed to Scott Street; .4 mi.
• Turn RIGHT onto Scott Street and proceed to N. Orange Avenue; .2 mi.
• Bear sharp LEFT onto I-275 North on ramp; .1 mi.
• Merge onto I-275 North and proceed to Fletcher Avenue, Exit 35; 7.9 mi.

In the event of an emergency, the media will be notified as to which shelters will open and what times. All of these shelters may not be opened. Shelters are opened based on the severity of an emergency and the number of residents to be impacted. In an emergency, residents must tune to the media to find out which are open and the times they are open.

Through the hurricane season, Hillsborough County officials may open more shelters than are on the above list. Residents are encouraged to monitor the media for additional information during an emergency.

Occupants in low areas are advised to evacuate based on the strength and movement of an approaching storm. Evacuation levels are shown on the map in five colors and letters. White numbers are shelter locations. Please note that selected sections of The University of Tampa campus are located within Level A and B Evacuation Areas, which suggests that certain areas are extremely vulnerable to tidal storm surge and flooding during severe weather.
