UT Department of Music

Department of Music

The music department offers a responsive and integrated curriculum for the successful training of musicians. Students in the program are prepared for music careers or for graduate-level study in teaching, performing and related areas. The department also prepares non-major music students for lifelong music participation.

Regardless of major, all UT students are encouraged to perform in ensembles, enroll in music courses and take studio lessons. The music department is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music.

Opportunities and Facilities for Learning

Students have many opportunities to perform, both on campus and throughout Tampa Bay. Performing ensembles include Collegiate Chorale; Opus, which provides entertainment for clubs, conventions and churches throughout the year; Wind Ensemble; Chamber Orchestra; Jazz Ensemble; “Pep” Band and others.

Music majors also perform individually in programs and recitals. Performing arts students have internship opportunities at Busch Gardens, where they are frequently selected to perform professionally in the park.

The Ferman Music Center provides an 11,000 square-foot facility designed by the music faculty. It includes a computer room, an audiovisual room and a technology suite with digital recording equipment, computers and synthesizer equipment, as well as band and choral rehearsal rooms, classrooms, practice modules and faculty studios.

Guest artists perform on campus and provide vocal and instrumental master classes. The University's location in downtown Tampa provides easy access to the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, just across the river.
