The department offers students a solid foundation in the five major areas of chemistry: analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry.
The program prepares chemistry students for entering the job market or for continuing their education at the graduate level. Research projects, publishing opportunities, internships and classes provide students with both lecture and laboratory experience.
Each chemistry major is assigned to a faculty member who serves as an adviser and whose specialty coincides with the student’s area of interest. Students are encouraged to learn by experience through research opportunities in areas such as environmental analysis, atmospheric chemistry, marine nutrient analysis, protein chemistry, organic reaction mechanisms, electroanalysis and biosensor development.
Programs The department offers the following degree programs:
- Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry
- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry
- Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry
- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (Biochemistry)/MBA Joint Degree
- Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science
Students interested in medicine, dentistry or veterinary science may wish to consider the
Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry degree. This program has been designed for pre-professional students whose interests lie in the chemical sciences.
The joint degree program for a
Bachelor of Science in Chemistry/MBA is designed to develop scientists who can serve as managers, group leaders and analysts in chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical diagnostic and investment companies. Program participants are awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in either chemistry or biochemistry and a Master’s in Business Administration.
The
Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science degree prepares students for careers in forensic chemistry and forensic toxicology. Graduates typically are employed in local, state, and federal crime laboratories or law enforcement agencies, such as the FDA, EPA, and OSHA. Forensic chemistry is an option for pre-professional majors and for those interested in pursuing masters and/or doctoral degrees. Students successfully completing the program will also be awarded a minor in criminal investigation.
On-Campus Associations Chemistry majors are encouraged to join the Student Affiliates Chapter of the American Chemical Society, or Skull and Bones, the pre-professional society.
