akrause@ut.edu When I first heard about the Honors Council, I was pleased to find that that its members cared just as much about social and service pursuits as they did education and personal development. As a freshman Honors student, I knew instantly that this organization was something with which I wanted to be involved.
I was also pleased to find that The Honors Council offered numerous leadership positions — even for freshmen. In my first year on the council, I served as a class representative for both of my Gateways courses, attending biweekly meetings and reporting on upcoming events. I also joined the Community Service Committee in order to learn more about service opportunities in the Tampa area. By the end of my first year, I had the honor of being appointed chairperson of the committee.
Organizational positions available to any Honors student range from independent representative to academic affairs chairperson. I now have the privilege of serving as president of the Honors Council, having previously served as secretary during my junior year.
Through my various roles and involvement with the Honors Council, I have learned invaluable communication and leadership skills that I will carry with me well beyond my college years. The organization has also introduced me to other students with shared personal goals. Finally, the Honors Council has provided the unique opportunity to work with distinguished UT faculty members who serve as extraordinary mentors and helpful references for me and countless other Honors students.
